OPERATIONAL SUPPORT FOR PILOTAGE PLANNING
Safe pilotage depends on preparation, situational awareness, and clear communication. The resources below are commonly used by vessel operators, agents, and pilots to support planning and coordination in advance of pilot boarding and transit.
Final operational decisions remain the responsibility of the vessel’s master and bridge team.

Serving the Navigational Needs of the Northeast
Northeast Marine Pilots support safe vessel movements across Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and designated portions of New York under applicable state and federal pilotage regimes.
A general reference map illustrating the primary waters where Northeast Marine Pilots routinely coordinate pilotage services. Specific pilotage requirements vary by vessel type, flag, and transit segment.

ANCHORAGES & HOLDING AREAS
Certain anchorages and holding areas are commonly used by vessels awaiting pilot boarding, weather improvements, or traffic sequencing.
Brenton Point Anchorage
Brenton Point Anchorage is frequently used as a staging or holding area for vessels operating near the approaches to Narragansett Bay. General considerations may include, exposure to weather and sea state, traffic density, depth and swinging room, temporary holding or drifting while awaiting pilot boarding coordination.
Additional anchorages and holding areas might available but often require compulsory transit pilotage. Vessels should contact their agent(s) and local authorities (Customs and Border Patrol, USCG, etc.) to make appropriate arrangements and consult NEMP for additional guidance on local anchorages.

EXAMPLE LOCAL CHART:
Local navigational charts include recommended traffic lanes, pilot boarding areas, anchorages, separation zones, hazards to navigation and more. These materials will be reviewed during the master/pilot exchange (MPX).

WEATHER & VISIBILITY REFERENCES
Weather and sea conditions play a critical role in pilot boarding and vessel movements. Commonly referenced tools include:
- Local and regional marine weather forecasts
- Wind, sea state, and visibility observations
- Tide and current information
- Storm and severe weather advisories
Vessels are encouraged to monitor official marine weather sources continuously, particularly when approaching boarding areas or operating in exposed waters.
Weather and environmental information is subject to rapid change and should be independently verified.

WEBCAMS & PORT OBSERVATIONS
Live webcams and port observation tools can provide additional situational awareness regarding:
- Traffic density
- Visibility and sea conditions
- Ice, fog, or weather impacts
- Harbor and approach activity
Webcams are intended as supplemental visual references only and should not be relied upon as primary navigation tools.
Webcams are provided for general situational awareness only and may not reflect real-time conditions.
